How much dead skin are you wearing on your face everyday?
I always get excited this time of year because all sorts of pumpkin spice treats can be found everywhere, which means it’s Fall!
Like the trees, our skin is always working to shed dead skin cells to make room for new cell turn over. This is a process known as exfoliation. As the skin ages, the process of the skin cell turnover rate, slows way down going from a turnover rate of about 14 days to 30 days. What does this mean for our complexion? The build up of dead skin cells can cause several skin conditions as well as leaving our complexion dull, ashy, rough, and lacking luster and radiance. With the holidays approaching, let’s face it, this is not a favored look!
So let’s chat for a minute about the skin conditions that exfoliation can help us with. Has anyone ever experienced having blackheads? Most of us have and they can congregate in areas like the nose, chin, forehead, cheeks, and in more severe cases, the entire face. The lack of exfoliation is a huge contributor to this condition as the dead skin cells build up, clogging and suffocating our pores.
Too many layers of dead skin cell build up can also cause acne and blemish breakouts. In addition, the skin can become severely dry, flaky, and asphyxiated, lacking oxygen due to dead cells. In order to encourage the skin cell turn over rate, exfoliation is a must and should be done 1-2 times a week for approximately 1-2 minutes. Exfoliating beyond this time frame can temporarily irritate the skin.
